Community Action

Hello Summit County community!

In October 2017, Summit County Council established a new, more aggressive goal (Resolution 2017-16) to reduce countywide greenhouse gas emissions 80% below 2014 levels by 2050. The transition to 100% renewable energy for all residents and businesses in the County by 2032 will achieve an approximate 30% emissions reduction county wide (if achieved).

Winter is almost here and soon we will see snow piling on top of rootops! This can spell big trouble for home owners as a variety of factors relating to heating, insulation, and weather conditions can lead to big problems with ice dams, roof and gutter damage. Many home owners look to the assistance of heated tape (sometimes callled heat cable) along roof eaves to prevent the build-up of snow and the freeze-thaw of icicles from damaging their houses.

Around Park City and Summit County you can look around many neighborhoods and find many homes that have that distinctive zig-zag pattern on their roofs. But do you know what the environmental cost of operating heat tape or heat cables is? Depending on the size of the home, type and duration of usage of heat tape can significantly contribute to your monthly electricity bill! We at SCPW are hoping to gather more information about heat tape usage from our SCPW Community and residents of Summit County and Park City so that we can quanitfy more data on how heat tape impacts our electricity use as a community. Then, we plan to develop some best practices we can suggest to help reduce our electricity use from heat tape and benefit household utility savings.

Do you have heat tape on your home? Do you have 3 minutes to answer some questions?

Click here to fill out our community heat tape survey.

In just a few short days away Live PC Give PC will be here, the biggest Park City Fundraising event of the year! On November 9th, Live PC Give PC will be here to raise money for the awesome, hard-working organizations in Summit County that are working to make our community and world a better place!

Organized by the Park City Community Foundation, this extreme day of community generosity hypes up Summit County to raise funds for local causes, non-profits, and scholarships alike. Last year alone, the community worked together to raise over $2 million for local causes, from over 4,000 donors!

Join in on the fun and support Summit Community Power Works through Live PC Give PC! Then, join us in celebrating how just how awesome Park City is at giving back by attending the after-party at High West Saloon at 8pm on November 9th!

After some harrowing news about the most recent projections of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on the damages of a 1.5 degree Celsius (2.7 degree Fahrenheit) raise in global average temperature, the call to action has become louder among concerned citizens and climate activists. The high-impact consequences of a world warmed above these levels could spell ecological disaster, with compounding effects on political and economic stability. The report warns of catastrophic loss of ocean biodiversity and unprecedented sea ice melting without aggressive, immediate action. Read more in the press release and full report.

Park City isn't standing by idly, however, as Park City Mayor Andy Beerman and the Park City Council are considering amending the city's already aggressive climate goals. As they stand, the current goals are some of the most progressive community goals in the country. The city has pledged to become carbon neutral and powered by 100% renewable energy by 2032. But, the Mayor and Council recognize the severity of the IPCC report and are re-thinking the previously established goals. Read more in the Park Record article here.

Ever wonder how your water bill is calculated? I have!

If you live in Park City you can take a look at the rate schedule to see how different water users are charged different pricing structures. Those that use less water are charged less money! This tiered structure uses 6 block rates to charge users more if they use less water. The tiered structure also provides protection for essential uses of water indoors by maintaining affordability for lower-level users.

Today we are 16 days out since the launch of the #SCPWChallenge--two and a half weeks!

Not much time has passed yet but it is cause to celebrate because in that short time, we have met 1/4 of our 2018 sign-up goal! While we still have work to do in engaging our community and pushing Summit County residents to take action, we are making great progress thanks to participants like you!

Let's keep up the good work and try to engage more of our friends, neighbors, and coworkers to take action and make our community a better place! Together we can reduce our impact and address Climate Change right here in our own community!

Park City Transit has been awarded a $2.29 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration's Low-or-No Emission Bus Program, city and county officials said in a news release Thursday. The system, which covers Park City and other parts of Summit County, also received the grant in 2016 and 2017.

Each year, the grant has been awarded to support replacing older diesel buses with buses that are 100 percent electric. Six new electric buses from 2016 were used to create the Electric Xpress, a 6.9-mile all-electric express route connecting the Kimball Junction Transit Center, just off the I-80 exit, to Park City's Old Town Transit Center.

In 2018, 315,877 passengers rode the Electric Xpress from the start of the year through July. That contributed to Park City Transit's ridership of 1,645,896 from January through July 2018. The total does not include rides on Utah Transit Authority's route between Park City and Salt Lake City.

So far there are 37 diesel and six electric buses in the transit system's fleet.
